And that’s hard to find, kind of like when I talked about leadership earlier. So I know that that’s what they’re about. And when they get beat, they own it, and they come back to work. And I’m really thankful for when those guys have success, they come back to work. “And he’s a big part of us and we believe in him and I’m thankful for him. “I can say, without a doubt, we want Jaylen to be here,” Stevens said. Stevens said he’s had “nothing but great conversations” with Brown. Though inking Brown to a five year, $295 million extension that begins in the 2024-25 season may eventually lead to financial decisions elsewhere on the roster, Stevens sounded committed to continue building around Brown and Jayson Tatum for the foreseeable future. Stevens said he couldn’t publicly discuss a potential supermax extension for Jaylen Brown, but sounded fully in favor of keeping the soon-to-be 27-year-old wing long term. And we did try.” Brown ‘a big part’ of Celtics future So we have a good staff, and I think that’s one thing that kind of gets lost in the shuffle, because we did have a lot of people that we lost, too. I’m sure you’ll see, as we’ve talked about, our assistants this year and our assistants pretty much every year are going to be called and asked by a lot of teams. “But you’re also weighing, like, you’ve got a lot of people that are really talented in here. “We did try to add to the staff at that time,” Stevens said. “But we’ll at least have one addition that we’ll make now that we have a summer to make it, and then we’ll go from there.”ĭespite the desire to add to the staff, Stevens said he believes in the coaches already in Boston. “We’ll see how everything shakes itself out with what the staff looks like,” Stevens said. They may also need to replace other coaches if Udoka recruits some of his former assistants to join him in Houston. He said the Celtics will make at least one addition to Mazzulla’s staff. Stevens said the Celtics would have made immediate replacements to the staff if possible to provide “supplemental” help “because we believed in the people that were here.” Still, it’s clear that Stevens wants to beef up the staff anyway this offseason. “Those timings are tough for people to up and move or up and join a new team that they don’t know anything about or don’t know,” Stevens said. Stoudamire’s departure, near the end of the regular season, produced the same issue. The timing of Udoka’s suspension, just days before training camp, meant that most qualified candidates already either had jobs lined up or planned to spend the season away from the game. Stevens said the team did try to replace some of the departed talent on the coaching staff a couple of times: shortly before the season, when Udoka was initially suspended, and in March, when Damon Stoudamire, the top remaining assistant, l eft to take the Georgia Tech head coaching position. “We’ll look for somebody that has a lot of NBA experience for sure,” Stevens said.
The Celtics won’t make a change at the top of their coaching staff, but intend to arm Mazzulla with another experienced assistant. Even the coaches nobody talks about would. “And so, yeah, was he perfect? Would he like to have some moments back? Every coach would. And I know they’re easy to talk about, but when you can show all those through the expectations and the microscope that he was under, that’s hard to do. Those leadership qualities are hard to find. He’ll only get better at anything that he can learn from this year because he’s constantly trying to learn. We know that going in so we have to be able to judge things on the whole. Everybody’s going to overreact to the best players and coaches after every game. “I thought he did a really good job with this group. Stevens said he still believes Mazzulla is the right man for the job moving forward. Mazzulla, who led the team to 57 wins during his first regular season, fell one game shy of bringing Boston back to the NBA Finals. I certainly was leaning on the leadership at that point, that was not an easy thing.” “To do what (the staff) did in five days and get ready for the season and to start the season the way we did was a little bit more remarkable than people outside the building would have thought. There’s no question that will be a huge benefit (to have that before next season),” “I always needed a whole summer of planning, a whole summer of thinking and organizing thoughts and being able to catch yourself ready to emphasize what you want to emphasize on a daily basis. “I might have said this in September (when Mazzulla took over), but I couldn’t have done that,” Stevens said.
